We’re all looking forward to the day when Sky rams HDTV into our homes, but we know that something even better is on the distant horizon. While Sky’s box will output images in the lovely-looking 720p and 1080i formats, there is a third, even better quality type of Hi-Def: 1080p. This will be available on the PlayStation 3 as well as Blu-ray and HD-DVD players.Like 1080i, its image consists of 1080 lines, but unlike 1080i, it is displayed progressively, with each frame of video being shown whole, rather than in two parts. What does this mean to the average telly addict? Smoother pictures and less flickering, that’s what!
Sadly, most “HD Ready” kit can’t cope with 1080p. Only a handful of pricier flat screens and projectors have the necessary resolution to display it – and SIM2’s new HT3000 is one of them.
This £9,000 single-chip DLP model (due for launch in April) has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, as well as HDMI sockets, so it’s more than ready to start showing movies and games in glorious 1080p. We’ll just have to wait until these movies and games actually turn up. Ho hum.
